Dog Agility – A Sport for Everyone!

Agility is where dogs and their handlers make their way through a course consisting of contact obstacles, jumps, tunnels, and weave poles.  The essence of the competition end of Agility is to run a course with your dog as fast as possible without any faults.  However, there are many benefits to training a dog to do agility obstacles without ever considering competition.

  • Because agility is a team sport it builds a strong bond between dog and handler.

  • Shy or timid dogs will often show new confidence after mastering agility obstacles.  Once a timid dog discovers it can do a particular obstacle and obtain praise, the dog’s confidence builds.  You may bring out a whole new dimension to your dog’s personality neither of you knew existed.

  • Many dogs can improve coordination through the basic training exercises used to teach jumping and ramp work.  The process of teaching agility obstacles also teaches the dogs about their body and teaches them to use it more effectively.

  • Agility is a mental and physical outlet for dogs.  For the very active, high energy dog, it provides a method for releasing some of that energy in a positive manner.  This can help calm especially active dogs.
